In a cautious yet noteworthy development, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed a tentative approval of a new US initiative aimed at resolving the prolonged conflict in Ukraine. He described the proposal as a potential foundation for reaching a peaceful agreement.

Putin acknowledged receiving what he referred to as an “updated and modernized” proposal. He suggested that it might serve as the groundwork for a conclusive peace deal.

“However, we have yet to engage in any meaningful discussions about this text, and I believe I understand the reasons behind that,” Putin remarked while in Moscow.

Ukraine examines the proposals

Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities are considering the US’s proposal. President Zelenskyy mentioned that he anticipates a conversation with then-President Trump regarding the matter in the near future.

The development of the plan began shortly after US special envoy Steve Witkoff held discussions with Rustem Umerov, a senior adviser to President Zelenskyy. This information was shared by a senior Trump administration official, who requested anonymity as they were not authorized to speak on the matter publicly.

The official further noted that Umerov had largely accepted the plan after incorporating several modifications, subsequently presenting it to President Zelenskyy for consideration.

However, Umerov on Friday denied that version of events. He said he only organised meetings and prepared the talks.

He said technical talks between the US and Ukraine were continuing in Kyiv.

“We are thoughtfully processing the partners’ proposals within the framework of Ukraine’s unchanging principles — sovereignty, people’s security, and a just peace,” he said.
