Vast areas of central Queensland, along with the Darling Downs and parts of the southeast coast, are on high alert for intense rainfall and potential flash flooding. Rainfall is expected to reach between 60mm and 150mm over six-hour periods from overnight into today.
In the southeast, accumulated rainfall over 24 hours could total around 250mm, which could stress already saturated catchments.
Numerous roads have been shut down on the Sunshine Coast and throughout the South Burnett region. This includes the closure of all lanes on the Burnett Highway at Booubyjan, and the SES has received more than 100 requests for assistance.
A striking image shared on social media captures an individual perched on top of their submerged vehicle at Boonara Creek on the Murgon-Gayndah Road, just south of Booubyjan.
Footage depicts water gushing down Mount Coolum on the Sunshine Coast, with the waterlogged terrain causing trees to topple across Brisbane.
Emergency authorities issued flood watch and act warnings overnight and into the morning for areas including South Burnett, Chinchilla, and Sapphire. Residents are urged to prepare for flash flooding and to refrain from driving.
The severe weather warning extends from Clermont and Rockhampton in the north, south through Emerald and Gladstone, into Bundaberg, Gympie, Kingaroy and the Sunshine Coast.
The rain is expected to continue throughout today and tonight before easing tomorrow as the low moves offshore.
Flood Warnings are current for: Burdekin downstream of Burdekin Falls Dam, Don and Proserpine, Pioneer, Connors, Isaac and Styx and Plane, Baffle, Kolan, Burnett, Burrum and Cherwell, Mary, Noosa, Upper Brisbane, Paroo, Nicholson, Upper Flinders, Lower Flinders, Norman, Georgina and Eyre, Diamantina, Thomson and Barcoo.
