A Queensland nurse suffering from long COVID has been left permanently bed-ridden, requiring an oxygen machine 24/7.

The triple-vaccinated 30-year-old had been teaching infant first aid courses and had started her own business when her life was effectively put on hold.

“What COVID did is it damaged my lungs and impaired their ability to absorb oxygen into the bloodstream,” Abbey Jones said.

“At the moment it’s a bit of an unknown as to how long I’m going to need oxygen, but at the moment if I stand up or move around my levels drop very fast.”

Jones said the portable oxygen machine she needs to return home from hospital isn’t subsidised under the Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme – or any other disability grant system.

This is because long COVID is yet to be defined as an illness under existing government help schemes.

“So despite the fact that I’d be limited to my apartment, not able to do anything, I still wouldn’t qualify for any pension or support,” Jones said.

To help pay for the $5000 equipment, a friend has established an online fundraiser in the hope of alleviating the 30-year-old’s financial pressures.

Jones said the illness has significantly impacted her life, confining her to her hospital ward.

She said she’s been unable to work for the past 14 weeks, and so is feeling the stretch of ongoing rental, phone, medication and living bills.

“I have always tried to have an emergency fund set up but I haven’t been able to earn since February,” Jones said.

“I’m just really grateful to have people around me who’ve already donated.”
