Most of Australia gets a long weekend this week courtesy of a centuries-old quirk of British tradition.

The King’s Birthday public holiday will be celebrated on Monday, June 9, in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory.

Queensland and Western Australia mark the occasion later in the year.
