A prominent Melbourne surgeon is under investigation over allegations he performed unnecessary or excessive surgeries on young women.
Over 100 women have come forward claiming they had reproductive tissue and sometimes organs removed by obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Simon Gordon at The Epworth Hospital for severe endometriosis, despite little evidence they had the disease.

A recent investigation by Four Corners has sent shockwaves through the medical community, as it uncovered allegations against Dr. Gordon involving unnecessary surgeries. The report claims that Dr. Gordon conducted procedures such as ovary and, at times, uterus removals on female patients, even when pathology reports indicated minimal or no signs of endometriosis.

One affected patient, who spoke to 9News under the name Steph, recounted her distressing experience. She underwent a hysterectomy, only to later learn that the surgery was unwarranted. “I’m at a loss for words,” she confessed. “It’s been incredibly stressful.”

The gravity of these accusations has prompted action from Arnold Thomas and Becker, a law firm that has been in contact with over 150 former patients of Dr. Gordon. Principal Solicitor Emily Hart confirmed their involvement in the case, underscoring the widespread impact of these claims.

In response to these alarming revelations, Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan announced that the accusations have been escalated to law enforcement and the state’s healthcare watchdog. “Performing unnecessary surgeries is a crime,” Allan emphasized. “This is why it must be investigated by Victoria Police.”

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan says accusations have been referred to police and the state’s healthcare watchdog.

“Performing unnecessary surgeries is a crime. That is why it needs to be investigated by Victoria Police,” Allan said.

“This matter has been referred to Victoria Police because Women deserve answers.”

Dr Gordon has denied any wrongdoing. He resigned late last year.

His former employer, the Epworth Hospital, confirmed it reported Gordon to the Australian medical watchdog, AHPRA, after “concerns were raised with senior management in October 2025”.

An independent external review of the private hospital’s clinical governance arrangements have also been commissioned.
