The rainbow lorikeet has been identified as Australia’s most numerous bird species, according to the country’s largest citizen science study.
The vibrant feathers of the rainbow lorikeet have consistently made it the most observed bird since the commencement of the Aussie Bird Count in 2014, topping a list that has remained unchanged for a decade.
The vast number of birds recorded aren’t merely figures. BirdLife Australia leverages this information to guide its conservation efforts, with ambitious plans to prevent bird extinctions by 2032 and to stop the overall decline in bird populations by 2050.
“Watching birds is fun, but it can also be very important. Birds tell us a lot about the environment we live in.”
“The Aussie Bird Count is not only about enjoyment and understanding the birds around us better. It’s also about encouraging Australians to turn their interest in birds into a hobby that offers crucial data.”
The 2025 Aussie Bird Count will take place from October 20-26.
