NORTH CHICAGO, Ill. — The 200 Texas National Guardsmen who were stationed in the Chicago area under federal orders are set to return to Texas, according to information from two U.S. officials reported by ABC News.

The Guardsmen arrived at the Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago earlier this month. However, they have not been operational due to ongoing legal proceedings that have stalled their deployment.

Late on Friday, U.S. Northern Command hinted at adjustments to the federal troop assignments in various cities. In a post on social media platform X, the command noted, “In the coming days, the Department will be shifting and/or rightsizing our Title 10 footprint in Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago to ensure a constant, enduring, and long-term presence in each city.”

Meanwhile, the 200 Illinois National Guardsmen, also federalized by the Trump administration for duties in Chicago, will continue to serve on active duty, a government official confirmed.

In an online statement, U.S. Northern Command outlined their stance:
“NORTHCOM, acting on guidance from the Department of War, is continually enhancing our strategies and capabilities to safeguard the Homeland. Our commitment to protecting federal functions, personnel, and property is unwavering—every single day. We remain ready to deploy as many troops as necessary, for as long as necessary, to support our law enforcement partners in cities nationwide.”

“To that end, in the coming days, the Department will be shifting and/or rightsizing our Title 10 footprint in Portland, Los Angeles, and Chicago to ensure a constant, enduring, and long-term presence in each city. Our troops in each city (and others) are trained and ready, and will be employed whenever needed to support law enforcement and keep our citizens safe.”
