A distressing event unfolded in Central Queensland today as a roof collapse at the Curragh Coal Mine near Blackwater, roughly 800 kilometers northwest of Brisbane, has left one man missing and another hospitalized. The incident has sparked a rapid response from emergency teams.

The accident occurred in the afternoon, with emergency services receiving the call around 3 p.m. local time (4 p.m. AEDT). Queensland Police have confirmed that one individual was safely transported to the hospital with injuries that do not threaten his life. However, the search continues for another man who remains unaccounted for.

Authorities, including Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ), were promptly notified of the collapse. “RSHQ, along with emergency services and mines rescue, is responding to the incident,” stated the organization, underscoring the coordinated effort to manage the situation and ensure the safety of those involved.

“Initial information indicates one man was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and one other man remains unaccounted for,” Queensland Police said.

Resources Safety and Health Queensland said it had been made aware of the roof collapse.

“RSHQ, along with emergency services and mines rescue, is responding to the incident,” it said.

“Our current focus is on supporting efforts to recover a worker involved in the incident.”

Acting Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Tony Perrett said two workers had been “recovered safely” and crews were trying to rescue a third.

“Emergency crews, including the Queensland Mines and Rescue Service, are on site and doing everything possible,” he told the ABC.

“My thoughts are with all of those involved, their loved ones, the entire mining community.”
