A meth-addicted Adelaide mother who admitted to criminally neglecting her six-year-old daughter, who later died, has been jailed for 17 years.

Crystal Hanley and her six children endured appalling conditions in Munno Parra, located in the northern suburbs of the city.

In a tragic incident in 2022, her daughter Charlie succumbed to severe malnutrition at their home, leading to her body shutting down and her heart failing. This case has been recognized as one of the most severe instances of neglect in South Australia’s history.

At the time of her death, Charlie weighed just 18 kilograms, was wearing a nappy and was riddled with lice.

The details were so distressing that the judge had to pause the proceedings periodically to allow the crowded courtroom to process the information.

Hanley is required to serve a minimum of 12 years in prison before she can seek parole in mid-2037.

During sentencing, Judge McDonald remarked to Hanley, “You will have to live for the rest of your life with the knowledge of the devastation that you have caused to all of your children.”
