During a routine group photo session at Lavarack Barracks in Townsville, the floor unexpectedly collapsed beneath the 2nd Cavalry Regiment just before 2 p.m. today.
In response to the incident, fellow Defence Force personnel quickly administered first aid while awaiting the arrival of paramedics at the scene.
Upon arrival, paramedics implemented a mass-casualty protocol, prioritizing the soldiers’ care based on the severity of their injuries.
A total of 96 service members were evaluated. Sixteen of these were transported to Townsville University Hospital for additional medical attention, while another 41 received treatment at the base’s medical center.
Although the injuries were not life-threatening, some soldiers suffered from fractures and broken bones.
“All individuals who sustained injuries are currently receiving the necessary medical care,” stated Lieutenant Colonel Peter Francis.
“The area itself has been secured, and an investigation will take place to ensure that incidents like this don’t happen again.”
The Defence Force has contacted the families of those impacted.
