Syrian Kurdish authorities have set free 34 Australians from a northern Syrian camp designated for families of alleged Islamic State fighters, indicating they are set to be flown back to Australia from Damascus.

Hukmiya Mohamed, who co-manages the Roj camp, informed Reuters that these Australians were handed over to relatives who traveled to Syria specifically for their release.

They embarked on small buses heading towards Damascus.

The Roj camp is home to over 2,000 individuals from 40 different national backgrounds, predominantly comprising women and children.

Since the Islamic State lost its last stronghold in Syria in 2019, thousands suspected of having ties to the group have been detained at both Roj and another camp, al-Hol.

In January, Syrian government forces took control of large parts of northern Syria from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, eventually reaching a ceasefire agreement on January 29.

The US military last week completed a mission to transfer 5700 adult male Islamic State detainees from Syria to Iraq.
