NSW Police said they spotted a stolen Mercedes around 3pm in Gosford, where officers directed the car to pull over.

When the driver refused to pull over, a pursuit was initiated down the M1 Pacific Highway towards Sydney.

Images from the 9News helicopter showed police swarming the Mercedes on the Hawkesbury River Bridge just before 4pm.

Police arrested the three men on the bridge and they were taken back to Gosford.

The pursuit and subsequent police operation caused extensive delays on the road.

Two northbound lanes were closed on the M1 Pacific Highway.

Traffic remains heavy both heading north and south.
