A Victorian man has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed a police officer multiple times, leaving the senior constable with “significant injuries”.
The officer is recovering in hospital, following the attack at a home on Golden Beach Way in Torquay, southwest of Melbourne, about 4.30pm yesterday.
Police had gone to the home to carry out a welfare check on a resident.
When they arrived, a 49-year-old Torquay man allegedly rushed at police officers with a knife, police have said.
“Police deployed their taser and OC spray, however one member has been stabbed a number of times,” according to a police spokesperson.
The man was arrested at the scene.
He has since been charged with one count of attempted murder and assaulting emergency service worker on duty.
He has been held in custody and will appear before Geelong Magistrates’ Court today.
