Li-ion Energy's Burwash Place facility in Maddington

Residents in the southeastern suburbs of Perth are seeking clarity as they continue to face exposure to hazardous chemicals following a recent fire at a nearby recycling facility.

The incident occurred at a lithium battery recycling plant located in Maddington on Sunday, prompting a hazardous materials alert that remains active for the area.

“They are unaware of the specific chemicals involved and the full impact of the fire,” resident Katrina Kettley shared with 9News.

“While I recognize this is a novel product and issue, there should have been preventative measures in place to manage it,” she continued.

“People are suffering now, and they are simply being advised to visit their GP. But what exactly should we ask our doctors to test for?”

According to the Health Department, current findings suggest that significant health effects are unlikely.

If residents are experiencing symptoms, it’s recommended to shelter indoors and close windows.
