A tragic accident claimed the life of a 31-year-old man in Perth’s southern region when he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to traverse four lanes of traffic.
According to stunned onlookers, the incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Rockingham Road in Hamilton Hill. The man was accompanied by his dog at the time of the accident.
As a result of the collision, authorities blocked off all four lanes of traffic, marking a somber scene as investigations unfolded.
Witness Harvey recounted the harrowing moment, saying, “I actually saw the person who was running across the road flying up into the air. That image is quite traumatising, you know. It sticks in your brain.”
The man was hit by a southbound silver Toyota Corolla during his attempt to cross the busy road.
A silver Toyota Corolla travelling south hit the man as he crossed.
The driver and others, including an off-duty nurse and several medical students, stopped to help.
“He did a sprint, across the road at the wrong moment. He probably thought he could make it,” Harvey said.
The man was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital where he later died.
Major crash detectives closed the road for several hours.
Residents say the stretch of Rockingham Road is notorious, leaving some too scared to turn out of their driveways, because trying to get across four lanes of traffic is too dangerous.
It’s not the first time an accident has happened here.
“This corner has had a lot of accidents here, our house has been hit before, and our neighbour had someone actually go through the front of her house,” resident Marnie said.
The 32-year-old was assisting police but no charges had been laid.
