A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 hit Thailand and its neighboring country, Myanmar, around midday on Friday (4.30pm AEDT). The quake resulted in the deaths of at least three people in Bangkok and caused the collapse of an under-construction high-rise building, trapping numerous individuals underneath. Consequently, Myanmar declared a state of emergency across extensive areas.

The midday temblor with an epicentre near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second largest city, was followed by a strong 6.4 magnitude aftershock.

In response, Myanmar’s military-controlled government imposed a state of emergency in six regions, including the capital city Naypyitaw and Mandalay. However, due to the ongoing intense civil conflict, it remains uncertain how aid will be delivered to many affected areas.

Residents in Mangshi, a city in China located approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Ruili, experienced such intense tremors that standing became impossible, according to an account given to The Paper, an online news platform.

A resident of Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan, told The Paper that her ceiling lamp was swinging wildly and the shaking lasted more than 10 seconds.

Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention said the quake was felt in almost all regions of the country.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra called an emergency meeting to assess the impact of the quake.
