Baby's finger tip 'severed' at Queensland early childhood centre
An investigation is underway after a child’s finger tip was reportedly severed at a Queensland early childhood centre.
The child’s finger was injured at the Free Range Kids Laidley 2 Centre, west of Brisbane, on February 24, the Department of Education has confirmed.

A distressing incident has occurred involving a 10-month-old child, whose right ring finger was partially severed, according to a report by the Toowoomba Chronicle. The child has since received necessary medical treatment.

The Queensland Early Childhood Regulatory Authority has emphasized its commitment to safeguarding children in educational and care settings. A spokesperson from the department remarked, “Protecting the health, safety, and wellbeing of children attending early childhood education and care services is our number one priority.”

Currently, the Regulatory Authority is investigating the circumstances surrounding the child’s injury. The spokesperson stated, “The Regulatory Authority is aware of a matter involving a child sustaining a finger injury which required medical attention. As the incident is currently under investigation, no further information can be provided.”

In the meantime, the Authority continues to collaborate with the sector to enhance the safety and quality of early childhood education and care services throughout Queensland. This ongoing effort underscores their dedication to ensuring such environments are secure and nurturing for all children.

Free Range Kids Laidley 2 Centre is currently rated by the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) as Meeting National Quality Standards.

The centre is one of seven Active Kids Early Learning centres across Queensland.
