This morning, a 54-year-old man encountered difficulties while swimming at The Spit and was found unconscious by bystanders.

Ken Lloyd, a duty officer with Surf Life Saving Queensland, indicated that the man was accompanied by his carer.

“He ingested a significant amount of water, leading to a blackout, according to the information available,” Lloyd shared.

Nearby families used picnic rugs to provide shade for the man as lifeguards and paramedics attempted CPR.

Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, they were unable to revive him.

“The public was incredibly helpful, assisting in providing shade and keeping children away,” Lloyd mentioned.

“They rescued the carer as well.”

It is the second drowning on the Gold Coast in less than two weeks.

A 26-year-old Indian man died after being pulled from the water by lifesavers at a nearby beach.

“Water is dangerous, hopefully it’s not a sign of things for the summer,” Lloyd said.
