An Indigenous man stabbed to death in a targeted machete attack in Victoria‘s Gippsland region is being remembered as a loving friend as police try to find his killer.

9News understands a fight broke out between a group of people shortly before 11pm yesterday on Peter Street in Morwell.

Neighbours reported hearing a loud argument before two people were ambushed.

The group quickly dispersed and police arrived at the scene to find the pair seriously injured.

Kaiden Morgan, an 18-year-old man local to the area, died in hospital a short time later.

He is being remembered as a proud Indigenous man with a passion for traditional dance and a loving friend who would light up a room.

“You were one of the most loving people around and knew how to lighten a room up when you’d walk into it,” one friend said on social media.

“I love you so very much,” another said.

The second victim, a 20-year-old man from Warrigul, was found seriously injured a street away.

He was also taken to hospital, and is expected to make a full recovery.

Investigators say the attack was targeted and are asking anyone with dashcam or CCTV video or information to come forward.

The incident unfolded just hours after 15-year-old Dau Akueng was buried after he was allegedly killed in an unrelated machete attack in Cobblebank.

It has raised questions about the state government’s response to crime rates.

“These things are happening every day, what’s the government doing about this?” opposition police spokesman David Southwick said.

“Victorians should be able to feel safe.”
