The peak body for road transport says fresh national measures to combat the burgeoning fuel crisis is inadequate and overdue, warning businesses are going under “today”.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanesetoday announced the government will be granted new powers to help private importers bring more fuel into the nation as the government attempts to curb spiking fuel prices and panic buying.

Australia’s transport sector is in urgent need of immediate support, according to Warren Clark, the CEO of the National Road Transport Association (NatRoads).

“This assistance from the government can’t be business as usual,” Clark emphasized. “It must involve additional supplies sourced from the global market, effectively backing the purchase of shiploads of fuel to be transported to Australia.”

Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said Australia currently has 1.6 billion litres of petrol, which roughly equates to nine days’ worth, which is up “very slightly”.

Clark pointed out that the nation currently holds 2.7 billion litres of diesel, equating to about a month’s supply, which he described as “pretty flat.”

“What this indicates is that fuel is being rapidly consumed, particularly in regional areas of Australia,” he added.

Australians need to remain prepared as the war in the Middle East escalates, so too will volatile fuel prices, Bowen said.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission reported that the average daily price of diesel across five major cities reached $3.03 per litre on Wednesday, marking a 10 percent increase from the previous week.
