Donald Trump has threatened tariffs on any country that opposes his Greenland annexation plans.

“I might consider imposing tariffs on countries if they don’t cooperate with us regarding Greenland, as it plays a significant role in our national security,” Trump remarked during a healthcare event at the White House.

The president made the remark as he recounted using tariffs to force other nations to cooperate on a plan to lower drug prices in the United States.

Greenland, an expansive island covering 2.16 million square kilometers, is rich in resources and a former colony of Denmark. Today, it operates as an autonomous region under Danish sovereignty, located in the Arctic.

With the distinction of being the world’s least densely populated area, Greenland’s 56,000 inhabitants rely on boats, helicopters, and planes for travel between its towns, most of which are positioned along the island’s western coastline.

The capital city, Nuuk, epitomizes these towns, characterized by its brightly colored houses nestled between the rugged coastline and soaring inland mountains.

Outside the towns, Greenland is mostly wilderness with 81 per cent of its land under ice. Nearly 90 per cent of its population is of Inuit origin and the territory’s economy has long revolved around fishing.
