The Ukrainian security service has announced it orchestrated an underwater attack on the Crimea bridge, a significant supply link from Russia to the Crimean Peninsula, which was annexed by Russia.
According to a statement from Ukraine’s SBU security service, the operation involved 1,100 kilograms of explosives detonated to damage the bridge’s underwater supports, a vital supply line previously utilized by Russian forces in Ukraine.

The SBU released a video that seems to capture an explosion near one of the bridge’s numerous support pillars.

What’s the significance of the bridge?

Spanning 19 kilometers, the Crimea Bridge across the Kerch Strait serves as the sole direct connection between Russia’s transportation network and the Crimea region, annexed by Russia in 2014.

Russian troops utilized the bridge during their invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, moving across it to access Crimea and subsequently advancing to occupy sections of Ukraine’s southern Kherson and southeastern Zaporizhzhia areas.

What has Ukraine’s security service said about the bombing?

“Previously, we hit the Crimean Bridge twice, in 2022 and 2023. So today we continued this tradition underwater,” the SBU said in a statement, adding that the operation had been prepared over several months.

Was the mission a success?

The official Russian outlet, which provides regular status updates on the bridge, said its operation had been suspended for about three hours.
It provided no reason for the temporary closure but said the bridge had been reopened and was functioning normally.
