A 31-year-old individual is facing charges for allegedly committing an unlawful act or omission with the intent to harm, specifically endangering the life, health, or safety of others, as well as for making or possessing explosives under suspicious conditions. This follows an incident where a device was thrown into a gathering of 2,500 people at Forrest Place on Monday.
Coyne highlighted the cautious approach required before labeling an incident as terrorism, referencing the case of bombs discovered in a caravan in Dural, Sydney, in January of the previous year.
Although that situation was initially classified as terrorism, subsequent investigations revealed that the caravan was never intended to explode but was meant to instill fear.
“We aim to ensure decisions are grounded in comprehensive information,” Coyne explained. “Our goal is to avoid compromising future legal proceedings or causing unnecessary alarm within the community.”
Authorities have alleged that the “rudimentary” explosive thrown in Perth was constructed with ball bearings and screws, encasing a liquid within a glass container.
The suspect was apprehended by police and is said to have suggested that the device might contain explosives.
It failed to detonate, but the crowd was evacuated. No one was injured.
The 31-year-old has been remanded in custody and will face the Perth Magistrates Court on February 17.
The accused’s identity has been suppressed by the court due to concerns for his safety.
