A US Army sergeant opened fire at a military base in the southeastern United States on Wednesday (Thursday AEST), wounding five soldiers and leading to a temporary lockdown at one of the nation’s largest army facilities, according to officials.

Not many details have been released regarding what sparked the shooting at Georgia’s Fort Stewart, but the suspect, identified as an army sergeant, was confirmed by a US official. This official, who was not authorized to release public statements about the investigation, shared information with The Associated Press under the condition of anonymity.

The injured soldiers are stable and on the mend, reported Brigadier-General John Lubas. Army officials are withholding the names until families are notified, and they are not discussing potential motives, as stated by Lieutenant-Colonel Angel Tomko during a press briefing.

Law enforcement responded to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area just before 11 a.m. on Wednesday, with the arrest of the shooter occurring five minutes later, as per official reports.

The lockdown lasted about an hour.

Fort Stewart, situated approximately 64 kilometers southwest of Savannah, is the largest Army installation to the east of the Mississippi River, housing many soldiers and their families.
