China’s foreign ministry previously vowed to “firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests” of its students overseas, following the Trump administration’s move to revoke Harvard University’s ability to enrol foreign students.
That move was temporarily blocked by a US judge.
Rubio’s remarks did not specify the scope of the visa cancellations, though the State Department holds wide-ranging powers to grant and retract visas.
