Authorities received a call to Bathurst Correctional Centre at 9:30 am on Saturday, February 8, due to reports of an altercation involving two male prisoners and three visitors.
One Corrective Services Officer was caught in the crush, leaving him hospitalised with a broken arm.
All five were arrested at the facility and later charged.
A 32-year-old man and two women, aged 32 and 28, were charged with affray.
The older woman was also charged with common assault.
The two male inmates, aged 29 and 36, were also charged with affray.
All five have appeared before court and four of them are due to reappear at Bathurst Local Court tomorrow.
The woman, 32, is expected to appear in court on August 20.
Nicole Jess, who serves as president of the Public Service Association, informed 9News that the February incident was not unexpected and underscores the demand for additional resources.
“Like the police, we’re desperately short with correctional officers,” she said.
”We’ve seen a huge spike in the number of inmate population, many centres are now struggling.”
