There will be a recount in the seat of Bradfield after the first count resulted in a near-tie between the Liberal and Independent candidates.

All 112,374 votes have been tallied in the north Sydney electorate, with neither the Liberal candidate Gisele Kapterian nor Independent Nicolette Boele declaring victory.

Kapterian led the count by just eight votes.

Kapterian thanked her supporters and AEC staff in a message posted to her Instagram confirming the recount.

“Over the past two weeks, this count has remained incredibly close, and I thank both my wonderful scrutineers and the Australian Electoral Commission counting staff for their efforts throughout,” the post read.

“I also extend my thoughts and consideration to Nicolette Boele and her hardworking team during this roller coaster count.”

The Australian Electoral Commission confirmed this morning that it will conduct a recount to determine the winner, as the final margin is under 100 votes.

The recount will start on Monday, and is expected to take two more weeks.

The recount will involve a new count of all first preference votes as previously counted, followed by a re-examination of all informal votes.

There will then be a complete recount of the two-candidate preferred count again, before a redistribution of all preferences.

The division of Bradfield is in Sydney’s north.

In the House of Representatives, preferential voting ensures a candidate cannot be elected without holding an absolute majority (more than 50 per cent) of the vote – a process that can take several rounds of counting.
