ATHENS, Ohio — Ohio University announced on Wednesday the dismissal of their football coach, Brian Smith, citing “serious professional misconduct” as the reason for his termination.

Smith had been on indefinite leave since December 1st. The university revealed that his contract was terminated following an administrative review, which concluded that Smith had engaged in activities deemed as “serious professional misconduct,” reflecting negatively on the institution. However, the university has not disclosed further details regarding these allegations.

Smith’s attorney, Rex Elliott, responded to the decision with a firm statement: “We strongly contest Ohio University’s justification for terminating Coach Brian Smith for cause.

“Coach Smith is both shocked and saddened by these developments, and we intend to challenge what we consider an unjust termination to uphold his reputation. He has served the University with integrity and dedication, striving for the best for his players, fellow coaches, and the Bobcat community as a whole,” Elliott added.

Smith, aged 45, took the helm as head coach on December 18, 2024, succeeding Tim Albin, who moved on to lead Charlotte. Before his promotion, Smith joined Ohio as a running backs coach and passing game coordinator in 2022, advanced to associate head coach in 2023, and became the offensive coordinator in 2024.

Under Smith’s leadership, the Bobcats achieved a 9-4 record, securing a victory in the previous year’s Cure Bowl against Jacksonville State and overcoming West Virginia with a 17-10 win this season.

Defensive coordinator John Hauser will serve as interim coach for the Frisco Bowl on Dec. 23 against UNLV. The search for a permanent coach is underway.
