Australians cancel Easter holidays over fuel fears

Australians are rethinking their Easter travel plans as concerns grow over the country’s fuel supply. The uncertainties have prompted a wave of cancellations among holidaymakers.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has advised citizens to minimize car use and rely more on public transportation in the coming weeks, attributing the precautionary measures to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

In response to the situation, many have decided to forgo their Easter vacations. Among them is Elsa Ucak, a 66-year-old resident of Sydney, who has called off her planned getaway with her husband due to fuel consumption concerns.

“We usually head to the countryside, but given the current petrol issues, we opted to stay home this year,” Ucak explained. “We typically travel with a group of friends, but everyone has cancelled as well.”

Similarly, Rachel Abbott, a 27-year-old art director, has decided to cancel her Easter travel plans, joining a growing number of Australians reassessing their holiday itineraries.

Rachel Abbott, a 27-year-old art director, has also shelved her travel plans this Easter.

While she would typically go home to north-east Victoria, both the cost of driving and flights made her decide to stay in Sydney.

‘Work’s just been quite busy and flights are very expensive, and then if I were to drive, obviously it would be a lot more expensive,’ she said.

Australians who are travelling have also been advised to fill up their cars in the city as rural petrol stations are more at risk of running dry.
