It has been an eventful week on and off the cricket pitch, with the news That David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd is set to leave Sky Sports after 22-years as part of their coverage.

Meanwhile, England’s woeful Ashes campaign continued with another poor first day in the Third Test.

Bumble offers Sportsmail his views and insights on what proved to be yet another sobering day for England at the Ashes.

FLAT TYRE SUMS UP EVENTFUL WEEK

I’m sure it hasn’t escaped your notice but I have had quite an eventful week. So decided to have a therapeutic Christmas Day outing to Whitby.

Let’s say it was bracing! Sadly all the fish and chip shops were closed so we made do with a flask and cheese salad sandwiches. And the perfect end to the week? A puncture on the way home! Vipers and the dogs not impressed.

ENGLAND SHOW LACK OF PREPARATION

It was a case of same old, same old at the MCG and I come back again to the total lack of preparation for England. You can’t just walk into Australia and compete.

Of course there’s some sympathy because of Covid but there’s been no match practice at all and that’s been rammed home. The England batters collectively played far too low again for Australia.

ANGRY JOE ROOT

Joe Root was so angry when he got out. He knows how much rests on his shoulders. And it’s not helped in this Test by a long England tail.

With Mark Wood at No 8 that’s effectively four No 11s in international cricket terms. England were simply blown away again by a good attack.

NATHAN LYON PROVED ME RIGHT

Everyone talked about pace bowlers before this series but I said to watch Nathan Lyon and I was right.

He picked up three more wickets on the first day and England just can’t play him.

You can see they didn’t want him to settle but what happened? Jos Buttler slapped one straight down deep square leg’s throat. Idea right, execution wrong.

MEMORIES OF THE MELBOURNE CRICKET GROUND

Special memories of the MCG. In 1974 it was rock and roll and Bay 13, sadly not there anymore, kicked off every day.

They were fighting among themselves! The fans started throwing bits of ice at Derek Underwood so he wouldn’t field there.

Tony Greig decided to go down there himself and started throwing the ice back!

By the end he was throwing full cans and even the whole esky back at spectators. Don’t think you could do that these days.

RAY ILLINGWORTH WILL BE SADLY MISSED

We lost a great man over Christmas who knew all about rowdy Australian spectators.

Ray Illingworth took his team off the field at Sydney during the 1970-71 series because they were throwing things at John Snow and that didn’t go down well with the authorities.

But Illy was very well respected in Australia as he was throughout the cricketing world. He’ll be sadly missed.

MCG RITUAL

I’ll miss this year an MCG ritual I always have there of taking a stroll to the library to see if our very own former columnist Charlie Sale’s book ‘Korty the legend explained,’ a cracking little page turner, is still there.

They still talk about it down Fitzroy. Will have to see whether Charlie’s new book about intrigue at the MCC is going to make it to Melbourne.
