At least eight people have died and 45 injured after a train crashed into a double-decker bus northwest of Mexico city, according to reports.

The crash happened around 7 am in the industrial zone of the town of Atlacomulco.

The Red Cross, state police, national guard and uniformed officers from the State of Mexico Prosecutor’s Office are at the scene.

The bus involved in the accident was part of the Herradura de Plata fleet, transporting around fifty individuals as reported by La Jornada Hidalgo. Passengers on the upper level of the double-decker sustained the most severe impact from the crash.

Footage from a surveillance camera captured the bus maneuvering through dense traffic, trailing other vehicles as it cautiously traversed the tracks before the train unexpectedly collided with its center, effectively splitting the bus in half and dragging it along the rails.

There was no gate or signal visible in the video, but other cars were seen crossing the tracks before the bus.

Another video taken by a witness on the road after the crash took place showed part of the bus resting on the side of the tracks.

The bus suffered extensive damage, losing its roof and other significant parts. The video also depicted people standing and moving atop the double-decker.

Mexico’s Civil Protection agency confirmed an incident occurred on the Atlacomulco–Maravatío Federal Highway (industrial zone), where a train hit a Herradura de Plata double-decker passenger bus.

‘Eight people were reported dead and 45 injured, who were treated by emergency services.’

The bus driver has not yet been identified, but the train conductor was identified as Carlos Federico Velázquez.

Authorities have closed the crash site and announced an investigation will be conducted to determine the accident’s cause, assessing potential bus driver accountability and examining the railroad crossing conditions.
