A California man was arrested on Wednesday night after investigators say he threw a Molotov cocktail at police.

According to police, at approximately 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday, officers with the Corning Police Department began investigating a “loud banging noise” that was coming from outside the police department on the 700 block of Fourth Street in Corning, California.

The suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Cassidy Russ, began “fumbling with an item near the front of his waistband,” Corning Police Department said in a press release.

As the officers gave the man verbal commands, they say Russ lit a Molotov cocktail and threw it toward an officer, missed, and the object exploded near a parked vehicle.

Police say that Russ was seen by an officer walking away from the police department after throwing the explosive object.

An off-duty officer tackled Russ, but investigators say that Russ resisted arrest by concealing his hands by his waistband and backpack.

According to the press release, officers “used baton strikes and pain compliance techniques” to subdue Russ, who continued to resist arrest, police said.

Officers took Russ into custody by placing him in handcuffs.

According to the Corning Police Department, Russ was a suspect in another Molotov cocktail incident on July 26, 2022, and had an active arrest warrant for his arrest.

Police say Russ threw a Molotov cocktail near the area where the Corning Police Department stages marked patrol cars.

Russ was booked into the Tehama County Jail with no bond on several charges, including attempted murder, possession of an explosive device, arson, battery on a peace officer, and resisting arrest.
