Severe thunderstorms swept across the Tri-Cities and Southwest Virginia from late Thursday night into the early hours of Friday, causing widespread power disruptions. Many communities were left without electricity as the storms moved through the area. As of 6 a.m., several power companies reported outages, including Appalachian Power, BrightRidge, Powell Valley Electric Cooperative, LG&E and KU, Holston Electric Cooperative, and Elizabethton Electric System.
