Moment suspected kidnapper is arrested after 40 years on the run

A woman accused of abducting her daughter over four decades ago was dramatically apprehended outside her residence, an incident recorded on police body camera footage.

Debra Newton, 66, was approached by law enforcement in Florida last month as she strolled with her dog and a friend within their retirement community.

The moment a Marion County police officer disclosed there was an active warrant for Debra’s arrest, both she and her companion initially dismissed it as a prank.

“Uh oh, they’re coming for you,” her friend joked, chuckling at the notion.

Newton is alleged to have kidnapped her three-year-old daughter, Michelle, from their Louisville, Kentucky home in April 1983 and adopted a new identity to bring her up.

Neither the mother nor daughter had been seen or heard from for decades, despite Newton’s previous inclusion on the FBI’s list of ‘Top 8 Most Wanted parental-kidnapping fugitives.’

The case was unsolved until a Crime Stoppers tip directed the Marion County Sheriff’s department to Newton’s new life as ‘Sharon’ in The Villages.

‘They’re messing with you, Sharon,’ her neighbor said in the video. An officer assured her they were not and sent the neighbor home.

Newton had remarried, retired, and completely reconstructed her life in the almost 43 years her daughter had been ‘missing,’ per Fox 35 Orlando.

‘I didn’t do anything,’ Newton said in the bodycam footage as her husband came out of the house to assess the chaos. He looked equally bewildered by Newton’s arrest.

Officers handcuffed the suspect and loaded her into a patrol car, leaving her husband in shock with their dog in tow.

After she was arrested, Newton was extradited to Kentucky where a family member posted her bond.

She voluntarily appeared in court on December 8 and pleaded not guilty to felony charges of custodial interference.

Police said the charges do not have a stature of limitations, allowing prosecutors to move forward with the decades-old case.

More than 40 years ago, Newton and her husband Joe were packing up their Louisville, Kentucky home to move to Georgia for Newton’s new job.

Michelle and her mother left early for the family’s new adventure, but instead vanished. After one final phone call in 1985, Joe thought his daughter was gone forever.

‘Wouldn’t you want your child back at least to see her grow up,’ he told WLKY at the time.

Police remained on high alert, searching for Michelle for 17 years before dismissing the case in 2000.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s office reopened and reindicted the case in 2016.

It wasn’t until this year that a courageous amateur detective ‘identified a possible match for a 66-year-old woman using a different name,’ authorities said.

The US Marshal Task Force compared a 1983 image of Newton and a DNA sample from her sister to find a 99.9 percent match and end her alleged 43-year ruse.

Jefferson County Police found Michelle, 45, in a completely different state under a brand new name, unaware that she may be a victim.

They called Joe to let him know his daughter is alive and well. The pair reunited at his home in Louisville.

‘She’s always been in our heart,’ he told WLKY.

‘I can’t explain that moment of that woman walking in and getting to put my arms back around my daughter.’

Newton is due back in court on January 23. Both Joe and Michelle reportedly attended her initial hearing.

The Daily Mail contacted the Marion and Jefferson County Sheriffs’ Offices for more information.
