Police arrested a man they say attacked and critically injured a 68-year-old man in the parking lot of a shopping center Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The suspect, a 28-year-old Vista resident, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, according to Carlsbad police Lt. Darbie Ernst. The victim remained hospitalized late Wednesday afternoon.

The attack happened around 10:20 a.m. at the Plaza Paseo Real shopping center off Aviara Parkway and El Camino Real, Ernst said in a news release. Someone reported that the younger man was assaulting the older man in a parking lot.

Officers arrived to find the victim unconscious and suffering from serious head injuries, Ernst said. Paramedics took him to a hospital for treatment.

Witnesses helped officers locate the suspect and officers arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder, elder abuse and a parole hold, Ernst said, adding there was no known relationship between the two men.

Investigators are seeking additional information about the attack and asked anyone who may have witnessed it to contact police. Tipsters were asked to contact Detective Christopher Collier at (760) 931-2110 or [email protected], or Sgt. James Willis at (760) 931-2139 or [email protected] .

Anonymous tips can be submitted to San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 or sdcrimestoppers.org.
