Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been on radio station 2GB this morning and a big topic has been Australia’s readiness for combat, if war broke out today.
“With great respect, AUKUS is not just about nuclear-powered submarines,” Mr Morrison said, referencing the security alliance with the US and UK, and Australia’s nuclear sub deal.
“AUKUS is about cybersecurity and cyber defences,” Mr Morrison said.
“The first shot fired in any conflict is actually in bits and bytes. It’s not in bullets.”
The historic AUKUS deal will deliver eight nuclear-powered submarines which are set to enter the water in the late 2030s.
When asked how Australia could defend itself against the military might of China, Mr Morrison could not answer directly, and instead turned focus toward the nuclear-powered submarine technology and the AUKUS pact.
There has been a heightened focus on Australia’s security because of China’s tightening links to the Solomon Islands.
