Three people have been found dead after a house fire in the central Queensland city of Gladstone.

Emergency services were called to Whiting Street in Toolooa just before 6am AEST this morning.

When firefighters arrived, the two-storey house was engulfed in flames.

The house ended up partially collapsing, which hampered search efforts.

The blaze was brought under control by 7.20am, with the damage to the house hampering search efforts.

Speaking to media, Acting Superintendent Luke Peachey admitted there was a chance more bodies still could be found.

“We haven’t ruled that out today,” he said. ”It seems to be a house people come and go from.

“The fire situation is extremely distressing for all first responders and everyone involved. It will take a while to thoroughly assess everything before we can verify the precise figures.”

Peachey said it was a tragic incident, and authorities are working as hard as they can to identify the victims.

“It’s a tragic event,” he said.

“Those persons are still unknown, and we will be working throughout the coming days to establish what has actually happened with this house fire.”

He confirmed the cause of the fire was also currently undetermined.

A crime scene has been established, and the Queensland Fire Department has told 9news.com.au they have investigators on the scene.
