Washington Commanders safety Deshazor Everett has been charged with involuntary manslaughter stemming from a fatal December car crash that killed his girlfriend Olivia Peters.

Everett, who first signed with Washington in August 2015, turned himself in on Tuesday morning, per Ryan Sprouse of WUSA9. Everett’s attorney also released a statement on the developments.

“Mr. Everett voluntarily appeared earlier today at the Loudoun County Magistrate’s Office where he was served with a warrant for involuntary manslaughter,” the attorney said in a statement, according to Pro Football Talk.

“Shortly thereafter, he was released on bond. Our team continues to investigate this matter as we intend on vigorously defending Mr. Everett against these allegations. We continue to ask that judgment be reserved until all facts are fully investigated and litigated in the proper forum. At this time we cannot comment any further due to the pending litigation.”

The Commanders also stated Tuesday, “We are aware of these charges and are continuing to monitor the situation. We will have no further comment at this time.”

At the time of the incident, Everett, 29, was driving a 2010 Nissan GT-R around 9:15 p.m. when the vehicle “left the right side of the roadway, struck several trees, and rolled over,” a release from the Loundon County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia stated on Dec. 24. An investigation found that Everett was driving more than twice the speed limit of 45 miles per hour, according to the Washington Post.

Peters, who was riding as the passenger, was taken to StoneSprings Hospital and died from her injuries. She was 29.

Everett was also seriously hurt in the wreck, but did not sustain life-threatening injuries. He was placed on Washington’s reserve/non-football injury list in December.
