BLUFFTON, SC — The Bluffton Boys and Girls Club is on the brink of a leadership change, sparking discussions and raising questions within the community. The departure of a long-serving and beloved figure, Molly Hornbeak, has left many residents seeking answers.

After dedicating over 27 years to the organization, Molly Hornbeak, affectionately known as “Ms. Molly,” was unexpectedly dismissed in late September. Her tenure is credited with not only expanding the club’s reach but also significantly impacting the lives of countless young people in Bluffton.

In response to her departure, club members have launched a petition that highlights her pivotal role in transforming the club from a modest local initiative into a cornerstone of the community. The petition notes her success in securing millions in grants, donations, and community partnerships. These funds have been vital in providing children and teens with access to programs focused on academic achievement, character building, and healthy living. Her contributions are seen as essential in shaping the lives of many young residents and enhancing the community’s overall fabric.

Community members, including club parents, alumni, donors, volunteers, and local leaders, have expressed their shock and disappointment over her dismissal. They are now rallying for transparency, eager to understand the reasons behind the decision to let “Ms. Molly” go, a figure many credit with strengthening the very essence of Bluffton.

“Affectionately known as ‘Ms. Molly,’ she helped to grow the Club from a small, local program into a pillar of the Bluffton community and its youth. During her nearly three decades of leadership, she was instrumental in raising millions of dollars in grants, donations and community partnerships, ensuring that generations of children and teens had access to safe, enriching programs focused on academic success, good character and leadership, and healthy lifestyles. Her dismissal has shocked the Bluffton community and prompted an outpouring of support from Club parents, alumni, donors, volunteers, and local leaders who credit her with shaping thousands of young lives and strengthening the very fabric of our town.”

They want to know why “Miss Molly” was let go.

News 3 reached out to the Boys and Girls Club of the Lowcountry for some answers. They sent us this response,

“Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry is aware of recent social media activity and an online petition regarding a former employee. Because all personnel matters must remain confidential, we are unable to provide additional details or respond to allegations related to an individual’s employment. Our absolute highest priority remains providing a safe, supportive and positive environment for the youth we serve. Our commitment to our Club members, their families and our community is unwavering.”

No word was given on when a new director may be hired.
