Hospitalisation numbers for COVID-19 patients have risen in both New South Wales and Victoria, though intensive care numbers remain fairly steady.

NSW recorded 15,572 new COVID-19 cases today, down from 16,807 yesterday and 16,199 last Monday.

In the past week, hospitalisations have risen from 1270 to 1418, with 56 in intensive care, compared to 55 last Monday.

There were six new deaths recorded.

In Victoria cases have been rising, with 10,011 recorded today, up from 9008 yesterday and 8739 a week ago.

There are 305 patients with COVID-19 in hospital, compared to 252 last Monday.

But intensive care numbers in that time have dropped from 21 to 17.

Eligible Australians can today roll up their sleeves for a fourth COVID-19 jab, ahead of what doctors fear could be a new winter wave of the virus.

From today, a fourth shot will be available for anybody over 65, the immuno-compromised, those in residential and aged care, and Indigenous Australians aged over 50.

People seeking a fourth shot must have had their booster jab at least four months ago.

The rollout comes as experts predict a dual COVID-19 and flu wave in the winter months.

It has been two years since Australia had a serious flu season, due to pandemic lockdowns and restrictions.

Now, health authorities fear it will be joined by a rising wave of Omicron, with the BA.2 sub-variant pushing COVID-19 cases up around the country.

People are advised to keep up hand hygiene measures, and to continue mask-wearing and social distancing where possible.

Flu vaccines will also be rolling out ahead of winter.

Cases dropped in NSW and Victoria, where the Omicron variant is most prevalent, over the weekend.

NSW recorded 16,807 new COVID-19 cases yesterday, along with 11 deaths, while Victoria had 9008 cases and two deaths.

But it’s feared cases are much higher in the community, with many people choosing to self-manage after receiving a positive rapid antigen test result.
