The human remains found in the backyard of an abandoned building in Connecticut were those of a 12-year-old girl, police said.

On Wednesday, authorities made a grim finding near a home on Clark Street in Waterbury, as reported by the New Britain Police Department. Officers were responding to a call about “suspicious behavior” on the premises. By Friday, the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the remains were those of “an adolescent female,” according to the Hartford Courant.

Her cause of death was not provided.

“Although there are still numerous questions surrounding this incident, it is essential for us to let the Medical Examiner’s Office continue their investigation,” stated the police.

“Our department has been tirelessly working to compile the information that has emerged, aiming to piece together a timeline and pinpoint the location of events leading to this week’s discovery.”

On Thursday, a group gathered at the site with candles, stuffed toys, and pink balloons to create a makeshift memorial in honor of the young girl found deceased. The Courant reported that those gathered encouraged others to join a balloon release to commemorate 12-year-old Jacqueline “Mimi” Torres.

Authorities have not confirmed the girl’s identity. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
