What was meant to be a romantic proposal by the sea turned into a comical mishap thanks to an unexpected twist from the cruise staff.
Aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship, Amanda Bratton, 46, was dining with her boyfriend, Gary, who had meticulously planned a picture-perfect moment to ask for her hand in marriage.
At 43, Gary had envisioned a seamless proposal but just as he was about to get down on one knee, the waitstaff inadvertently preempted his big moment.
A video capturing the scene shows a waiter loudly announcing, “All right, so we’re going to sing, ‘Happy Engagement!’” before Gary could utter a word.
Amanda’s surprise was palpable as her eyes widened in disbelief, and a waiter presented a candlelit slice of cake while the staff serenaded the couple.
Initially taken aback, the 46-year-old Amanda soon burst into laughter, her hands covering her face in a mix of embarrassment and amusement.
Looking around at the staring faces on other tables, she whispered, ‘I’m not engaged!’
While Amanda sat back, visibly confused, a stoic Gary stared daggers at the dessert.

Once the staff finished their song, he grabbed the bag and pulled out the diamond ring to propose.
‘The cake and singing was all added. I think the wait staff were trying to make it special, but Gary was definitely surprised,’ Amanda recalled.
The Texas couple had been on the cruise a few years earlier with their kids, celebrating Amanda’s daughter’s birthday, she said on TikTok.
Gary had planned the proposal down to the last detail, picking the cruise ship setting knowing Amanda’s love for the open sea.
He even bought an engagement ring from the onboard jeweler, planning for it to be subtly delivered to the dinner table before proposing.
Instead, the element of surprise was ruined by eager staff who celebrated them a bit too early.
‘Instead of being special and romantic, it was chaotic and all wrong. I was so confused and couldn’t help but just laugh,’ Amanda said.
‘We have the worst luck so it tracks.’
The 46-year-old shared the video on TikTok, where it racked up over 170,000 likes and nearly 4,000 comments.
