A quaint town nestled in the heart of Kentucky’s Bluegrass region, renowned for its bourbon heritage, has emerged as a favored alternative to Louisville.

Shelbyville, positioned conveniently between Louisville and Lexington, has quietly gained a reputation as one of Kentucky’s most delightful spots.

Dubbed the “saddlebred horse capital of the world,” Shelbyville embraces its rich equestrian history. Each August, it hosts the Shelbyville Horse Show, drawing participants and audiences for four days filled with equine excellence, competitions, and live musical performances.

Currently, the typical home price in Shelbyville stands at $303,928, reflecting a 3.6 percent increase over the past year. Properties tend to sell swiftly, averaging just over two weeks on the market, according to Zillow.

“Though Shelbyville is a small town, it boasts a vibrant downtown where young entrepreneurs are revitalizing historic buildings,” local realtor Zach Tipton shared with the Daily Mail.

“At its core, it remains a suburban community with a robust park system and excellent schools, making it an ideal place to raise a family,” he added.

Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence grew up in the area, as did singer Jack Harlow who was born in Shelbyville.

Tipton believes in the future of Shelbyville so much he recently purchased an old dry cleaning factory downtown and is renovating it as a restaurant and office space.

There are also dozens of working horse farms across the county, making the region uniquely Kentucky.

Shelby County is also an outdoor lover’s dream with more than 400 acres of parkland and 21 miles of scenic trails. There are hiking trails through rolling countryside, and locals often saddle up for a trail ride on a horse.

There are several local golf courses, including one known for its championship course.

Bourbon is also the state’s most famous export.

Shelbyville is home to many bourbon lovers who frequent the mother-daughter-run Jeptha Creed Distillery, famous for using the local nutty and sweet bloody butcher corn, and the popular Bulleit Distilling Company. Both hold tastings and live music events off the beaten path, but still on the official Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

Wine enthusiasts are not left out either. Shelbyville’s rich soil is prime for local vineyards, which hold weekly tastings.

Beyond horses and bourbon, Shelbyville has its share of unique quirks.

At The Polkadotted Pineapple, shoppers can collaborate with milliners to design custom hats for the Kentucky Derby.

Local art can be found throughout downtown, where there are eight public-art pieces by regional artists, including a winding steel sculpture and two five-feet-tall fiberglass bison.

Creatives can try their hand at pottery during free workshops at Ceramic Wisdom. Antique lovers can search for hours at Wakefield-Scearce Galleries, a vast 30,000-square-foot treasure trove housed in a former boarding school, specializing in English antiques and odd curiosities.

When it comes to food, Shelbyville serves up true Southern tradition.

‘There’s a couple really sweet spots like the Bell House, which is a great community restaurant,’ Tipton said.

‘That’s a good place to go grab some wine and have a nicer dinner. There’s a couple Mexican restaurants downtown that are really good and a sports bar and a small brewery.’

The Claudia Sanders Dinner House, once owned by Colonel Harland Sanders of KFC fame, still serves his original chicken recipe. Locals swear by McKinley’s Café for its historic Benedictine sandwich, a simple cucumber and cream cheese on freshly baked bread.

Harbison House, a restored 1870s farmhouse, is now a modern boutique hotel which offers picnics by a pond on the property. The building is featured on the National Registry of Historic Places and dates to the 1870s.

What residents really love about Shelbyville is that it’s not as crowded and overwhelmed by tourists as Louisville, which is only a 30 minute drive away.

But locals still get boutique shopping, museums and family-friendly farms offering hayrides and seasonal fruit picking for a family-friendly feel.

‘I’m a developer too. I want to see things revitalized and see growth,’ Tipton said.

‘But it’s a nice balance, because no one wants to see the over commercialization of our community either.’
