Disney World files shock demolition permit on beloved landmark

Disney World has been in the midst of significant transformations, ranging from the closure of long-standing attractions to the development of entirely new themed areas.

Recently, the renowned theme park in Orlando, Florida, submitted a new demolition permit concerning a cherished fixture of over 27 years: the iconic Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

This permit, submitted earlier this week, indicates plans for “facility demolition” and involves Whiting-Turner, a contractor known for handling large-scale Disney projects, according to a report by Inside the Magic.

The scope of the permit also includes electrical modifications and general construction work.

While specifics about what will be demolished remain unclear, it is unlikely that the Tree of Life itself is slated for removal.

More details should become clear soon, as the permit is set to expire on December 30, 2025, indicating that any planned work on the Tree of Life will likely commence in the near future.

The news left Disney fans scratching their heads as the park opened a new attraction inside the Tree of Life just one month ago, a 4D show, entitled Zootopia: Better Zoogether!

The show, which is the first Zootopia-themed attraction at Disney World, replaced the It’s Tough to Be a Bug! show in the Tree of Life Theater at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

It allows guests to ‘celebrate Zoogether Day’ with fan-favorite characters Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde.

But reviews were mixed following its grand opening in November.

Many guests were left disappointed by the new addition to the park, and took to X, formerly Twitter, to share their outrage after experiencing it for the first time.

‘Zootopia: Better Zoogether! is straight garbage,’ raged one user. ‘This is my least favorite attraction on property.

‘It’s a horrible clip montage with no overarching theme, [and the] pacing [is] too fast to keep up with on the dim screen and [in] 3D.

‘An absurdly awful song, corny writing, and zero attempt to fit [Animal Kingdom’s theme].’

‘I found it frantic and the sound balance was horrible all I could hear was the sound effects and music and not any dialogue,’ chimed in another.

‘The show honestly is straight trash and should not be in the park period,’ someone else penned.

‘I thought it was horrible. It’s definitely not an improvement over It’s Tough to be a Bug! It’s a one a done kind of show,’ read a fourth post.

‘Besides the [animatronic], the show is a cheap, poorly put together Disney+ clip show reusing the typical 3D tricks,’ someone else wrote in a review.

‘Will the kids like it… sure. Could they have done better… absolutely!’

‘Hey I understand things cost money, time and everything has a budget. But this was lazy, elementary and didn’t pay tribute to the park it’s in,’ they added.

‘The Zootopia movie has nothing to do with animal problems or about Animal Kingdom’s message, but you can make a good show with the Zootopia characters that reflects the parks message and core. This is just slapped together and anyone could have produced it.’

Some people, however, came to the new attraction’s defense, pointing out that all of the social media users who were bashing it are adults when it’s actually made for kids.

‘When will you guys get you’re not the target audience for this attraction?’ a user asked in response to one of the negative posts.

‘My kids liked it so… sorry bro almost like it wasn’t meant for you or something,’ replied another.

‘I loved it,’ announced someone else. ‘It was an amazing and coming from a fan of the Zootopia movie.

‘If you didn’t like it I respect your opinion but then don’t see it at all and let real Disney fans be excited about it.’

‘The bug show was damn near empty year round, it wasn’t drawing crowds. The show may not meet your standards due to nostalgia, but think about all the kids and families getting to experience this fresh for the first time. They are gonna have a blast. This is who it’s for…’ pointed out a different Disney fan.

‘This show was cute and my niece who is seven loved it,’ shared another.

‘For the average family with young kids, this show has high-energy moments, recognizable characters and it is noticeably less scary than the former show,’ read a different post.

It’s Tough to Be a Bug!, which had been enjoyed by park goers for 27 years before it closed in March, allowed guests to shrink to the size of an insect and learn about human-insect coexistence.

The new show features an original song and an advanced Officer Clawhauser audio-animatronic like the one in the Zootopia: Hot Pursuit ride at Shanghai Disneyland.

‘The time has come for citizens from every biome in Zootopia to come together for fur-ocious fun in honor of Zoogether Day,’ reads a description.

‘From special performances across Zootopia to an epic musical finale, come ready to leap, laugh and let loose.

‘It’s the perfect way for your pack, pride or herd to celebrate how we are all better zoogether.’
