A security guard and two other people were shot and wounded Wednesday during an altercation at a small shopping center in El Cerrito, San Diego police said.

All three victims were taken to hospitals and expected to survive, Officer Robert Heims said.

The shooting occurred just before 8:30 p.m. off University Avenue and 54th Street, outside a shopping center with a Northgate Market grocery store and Burlington clothing store, Heims said.

Just before the shooting, a group of people got into an argument with at least two people inside a black vehicle, Heims said in a news release. After the argument, the vehicle’s driver reportedly sped away driving recklessly.

The pedestrians who had been arguing with those inside the vehicle ran into one of the nearby businesses to alert security, Heims said. As they did so, the vehicle drove by and someone inside fired several rounds, striking the guard and two others.

The vehicle drove off after the shooting, Heims said. No descriptions of it or the people inside of it were immediately available, and nobody was in custody in connection with the incident late Wednesday.

San Diego police gang detectives are investigating the shooting, Heims said.
