CHULA VISTA —
A driver died Monday after he veered off a residential Chula Vista roadway and crashed into a tree and brick wall, police said.
Investigators are probing whether some sort of medical condition may have contributed to the crash, which occurred around 3:25 p.m. on Hilltop Drive near East J Street near the backside of Hilltop Drive Elementary School, according to Chula Vista police Agent Brian Carter.
The victim was the driver and lone occupant of a Volkswagen Passat, Carter said in a news release. His name and age were not released.
Witnesses said the Passat’s driver was stopped at a red light at Hilltop and East J, and initially remained stopped when the light turned green, Carter said. After several seconds, the driver sped north on Hilltop, then veered to the right, crossing the driveway of a home before slamming into the tree and wall.
Witnesses who called 911 said the driver was unconscious and suffering from a head injury, Carter said. Police officers and Chula Vista firefighters provided medical aid, but he died just before 4 p.m. at the scene.
The Chula Vista Police Department’s traffic division is handling the investigation, and anyone with information abou the crash was asked to call the department at (619) 691-5151.
