These are the Top 10 most stolen vehicles in Illinois

ILLINOIS – If your car was recently stolen in Illinois, you’re in good company. The National Insurance Crime Bureau has reported over 13,000 vehicle thefts in the state during the first six months of 2025.

On a national scale, more than 334,000 cars were stolen in the same timeframe. Illinois finds itself in the fourth position for total vehicle thefts at mid-year, with 13,374 incidents. It trails behind only California (70,193), Texas (38,746), and Florida (14,266).

The NICB has just released its annual mid-year vehicle theft report. In collaboration with FOX 2, the bureau shared additional insights, indicating that some car models in Illinois are more frequently targeted than others.

According to the NICB, the Top 10 most stolen vehicles in Illinois up to June 30, 2025, have been identified.

  1. Hyundai Elantra (540 thefts)
  2. Jeep Grand Cherokee (526)
  3. Hyundai Sonata (439)
  4. Kia Optima (260)
  5. Nissan Maxima (248)
  6. Chevrolet Malibu (234)
  7. Dodge Charger (211)
  8. Toyota Camry (203)
  9. Kia Sportage (199)
  10. Dodge Durango (195)

Notably, four out of the ten most stolen models are from Hyundai or Kia. These brands have been popular targets due to a widespread ignition defect, which made certain models easy to start without a key.

The NICB also highlights that while vehicle thefts surged in 2023, potentially exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, they are now returning to pre-pandemic levels. This trend suggests that vehicle thefts are poised to decline nationwide for the second consecutive year.

“While vehicle theft continues to impact communities across the country, NICB will continue fostering strong partnerships and the use of advanced data analytics to make meaningful progress in protecting consumers, holding criminals accountable and bringing peace of mind to American communities,” said David J. Glawe, President and CEO of NICB.

The NICB reports, the St. Louis metropolitan area, which includes both Missouri and Illinois, reported around 4,716 vehicle thefts midway through this year.

Additionally, NICB found Illinois with a vehicle theft rate at around 105 stolen vehicles per 100,000 residents, just outside the Top 10 highest-rated states in that measure.
