Horrified bystanders tried to talk an Australian diplomat’s husband down from a 27th floor balcony before he plummeted to his death, witnesses have revealed.

Good Samaritans tried to persuade the 31-year-old to leave the ledge opposite the Empire State Building before the shocking incident on Monday, onlookers said.

They told DailyMail.com how there were ‘loads of people’ trying to help him off the terrace to safety at 325 Fifth Avenue.

Meanwhile other witnesses said they watched from an office block over the street as he fell and ‘smashed through a load of tiles’ on a lower balcony when he landed.

The man, who has not been named, fell from the building around 5.30pm on Monday and reportedly left a suicide note.

He is said to have plummeted nearly 20 storires before slamming into a third floor terrace jutting out of the complex – and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A concierge at a nearby building told DailyMail.com how a crowd had been talking to the victim before he fell.

He said: ‘People were trying to talk him out of it, I’m not sure if he jumped in the end or not as I had to go home.

‘But there were loads of people there trying to stop him from falling or jumping. He was sort of standing there on the building facing Fifth Avenue.’

Another witness, who works across the road, described watching as the man fell to his death.

He said: ‘It was awful, he fell right off the top and landed on a sort of sticking out part of the third floor.

‘There was blood everywhere, he smashed through a load of tiles on the balcony and it was such a mess. I work literally across from the building and saw it all happen.’

Meanwhile a doorman at a building across the street said he was ‘surprised’ at the apparent suicide because he had been in a ‘very glitzy’ apartment block.

He added: ‘It’s surprising because if they lived in that building, it’s a very glitzy place and a high quality of life there.

‘Who knows why he did it, but it sure is a nice apartment.’

The complex at 325 Fifth Avenue offers exclusive views of the Empire State Building as well as much of the Midtown skyline.

Condos are for sale in the building for nearly $3million and different rooms feature unique layouts.

The building, which stands at 41 storeys with 250 units, also has a private gym, an indoor swimming pool and spa and a children’s playroom. It was completed in 2005.

The death comes after a spate of suicides across New York City this year, including former Miss USA Cheslie Kryst.

The 30-year-old lawyer also worked as a correspondent for the entertainment show Extra. She jumped from a skyscraper in Hell Kitchen in January.

She won the Miss USA pageant in 2019, using her platform to speak out about social and criminal justice reform.

Kryst, who had an apartment on the ninth floor of the luxury building on West 42nd Street, leaped from the 29th floor of the 60-story high-rise around 7.15am.

In March, a 33-year-old woman was killed after she jumped off an overpass onto a busy four-lane road, where she was fatally struck by an SUV driver who did not stop.

Police said the woman leapt from the East 135th Street overpass above Harlem River Drive around 10am and was struck by the white car traveling northbound.

When authorities arrived on scene they found her unconscious, unresponsive and had suffered trauma to her body.

Last week, a New York Supreme Court justice killed himself days after cops raided his house as his ‘really close’ friend – the nephew of Buffalo’s alleged top mob boss – faced federal charges of sex trafficking and bribery.

John Michalski, 61, was found dead at his home near Buffalo last Tuesday, his lawyer said. The circumstances of his death remain unclear.
