Everton’s players have been impacted by the wait to see if their appeal against a 10-point deduction has been successful.

Sean Dyche’s side moved out of the bottom three on goal difference with a 1-1 home draw against Crystal Palace on Monday night but would be 12th had they not been punished for a breach of Premier League profit and sustainability rules.

A verdict on Everton’s appeal is expected this week. While players usually pretend they ignore things out of their control, midfielder James Garner is candid enough to acknowledge it does have an impact.

‘We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game against Palace but I feel like it is one that has definitely got away from us.

‘It was a very frustrating night.’ Garner, 22, has been one of Everton’s bright sparks this season and been mentioned as a possible England call up.

But the team’s overall showing against Palace produced a few boos at Goodison which he didn’t try to duck.

‘I can understand the fans’ frustrations, I am frustrated myself, but there is so long to go [in the season],’ he reflected.

‘We need the fans to be supporting us and not booing us. That is important going forward.

‘I didn’t even realise we are now out of the bottom three but that is a big boost, especially going into next week against a tough team (Brighton).

‘We just need to keep ourselves above that dotted line, and hopefully when the results of the appeal come back, we are much higher up the table.’
