Firefighters extinguished a fire in a smoker in a barbecue restaurant in Escondido that prompted a two-alarm response early Wednesday morning, a fire official said.
A fire was reported at the Wrangler Family Barbecue on East Valley Parkway near North Rose Street shortly after 10:50 p.m. When crews arrived they saw heavy smoke coming from a vent pipe in the building’s roof, said Escondido fire Battalion Chief Jeff Sargis.
Firefighters also found heavy smoke inside the restaurant and called for additional resources in order to protect neighboring buildings in the strip mall, he said.
However, once crews were inside, they used thermal imaging cameras and found the fire was burning inside a large steel smoker. “It charged the building with smoke but we didn’t have any extension,” Sargis said.
He said they quickly attacked the fire and were able to minimize damage. It took them about 45 minutes to put out the blaze.
No damage estimate was available but Sargis said “there was really very little damage.” He said the restaurant will have to do some minor cleanup.
